Théâtre Saint-Lô > "L'avare"

For Benoît Lambert, it's abundantly clear that the Harpagons of our world have won the game lost by the play's hero. With him, we find ourselves rediscovering what we thought we knew. Faithful to Molière, the director offers a lively, sharp version of the play, focusing on the art of the actor, from the conflict between Harpagon and his son, to the theft of the treasure, to the quarrels with his valets? The company is brilliantly led by Emmanuel Vérité, who portrays Harpagon as both tragic and grotesque, driven mad by his burgeoning obsession with money, which prevents him from living and letting live the young people who flail and struggle around him. Set against an imposing backdrop of wood, ropes and trestles, the play takes us back several centuries.

"It's the trestle, the sun, the full light, the mechanics of laughter, but also brutality, violence, pimping and trafficking," says Benoît Lambert. "To put on a classic is to give yourself the pleasure of being elsewhere and of the past. It's about being able to say to yourself: Well, that hasn't changed, but also: How it's changed!"
