From July 7 to the end of 2023, the Archives départementales, Maison de l?histoire de la Manche will be presenting a new exhibition devoted to Jules Barbey d?Aurevilly?s famous novel, Le Chevalier Des Touches, set entirely in the Manche region, in Valognes, Avranches, Coutances and the Côte des Isles.
This event presents manuscripts and letters by the author, enriched with iconographic documents, tracing the writing process of this work whose characters are inspired by real people from our department.
In addition to the novel, the exhibition will introduce you to the life of the real Jacques Destouches, the historical figure who inspired Barbey d?Aurevilly, and to the end of the revolutionary period, through numerous original archive documents on the Norman Chouannerie.
